Session 5: Makes House Party look like House Party 2 Read transcript →
The band treks from East Haven to Caer Dineval, the next stop on Herbius Beardman's booking spree. Caer Dineval is barely a town — one surviving tavern (the Uphill Climb) and a lot of weird vibes. Rourke, the Northman barkeep, already knows the band by reputation, name-checks Kaldur's uncle (the dwarf who allegedly killed the Kerr Koenig chandelier dragon with a brick), and books them for the night. Dreadie orders a Dirty Shirley before the stage is built.
Rourke also hands over lore that makes the party raise their eyebrows at each other: the Caer up the hill is now guarded by a dozen soldiers with black swords, the Speaker is 'taken ill,' and everyone's spooked. His old inn across town, Denev's Rest, went haunted on him after bar staff started disappearing. Roadie's eyes light up like a slot machine.
Roadie's exorcism plan is simple and insane: buy two kegs off Rourke as 'ritual materials,' load them on top of the Chuggy Pig with a stage, parade a drunken rock-and-roll conga across town, and dump Caer Dineval into the haunted inn to overwhelm the ghosts with positive vibes and cocaine. He charges a silver a beer. Dreadie belly-flops trying to kick the door down and breaks his pinky toe. Scales dive-rolls through a window Conan-style; Enjee picks the lock from the inside anyway. Scales buries his dragon snout in a bar line of cocaine, grows haste-shark eyes, breathes fire for atmosphere, and takes his pants off at some point. They never come back on.
The 'ghosts' are the last of the Sunblight clan — Deep-Duergar remnants with Mind Masters and Soul Blades, hiding in Denev's Rest's bones and maintaining the haunted exterior to keep locals away. Enjee eats a stab-ambush from a hidden Soul Blade and nearly goes down. Scales body-checks through an interior wall instead of going around. His exposed dragon penis distracts an enlarged Duergar into face-planting the wall. Kaldur sniffs 'smelly Duergar' through the floor and starts chopping the second a hole opens.
Meanwhile Roadie's crowd goes Woodstock-99 feral. The only cop in town is beaten reverse-Rodney-Kinged dead. Roadie grapples a Mind Master into chains at the stair-top and shoves him down into the mob; the DM narrates the result in three staccato beats — 'Pumbled to death. Crit, crit, crit.' A middle-aged woman pulls her top off and screams 'anarchy.' An eleven-year-old boy named Timmy picks up a dead Duergar and starts devouring him. Kaldur, blood-soot-smeared and surrounded, patiently talks the mob down with 'I'm one of the good ones.' Rico — barely-NPC'd with Troy absent — glazes over every time William Moon comes up and face-plants on top of Kaldur after jumping a window.
Dreadie finds Roadie back onstage shredding a Dreadwurst-flavored solo, and holds out a bone guitar pick as a test — innocent bison bone, Dreadie's own, but the moment still lands. He needles Roadie by his old stage name — 'Wets Gorland' — and Roadie drops the pick, walks away from his own crowd, then quietly doubles back to decapitate a dead Duergar on the hypothesis the brain holds the soul-weapon craft, with the stated plan to build Rico a magic pick. Kaldur watches wordlessly as Roadie makes the exact same mistake two sessions in a row.
The Duergar piggy bank behind a dart-trapped floorboard pays out: 340 gold, 620 silver in ale profits, four garnets, two black onyx, a mithril ingot, potions of growth and invisibility, a bag of mystery alchemical dust Kaldur declines to open, and a ceremonial +1 war pick engraved with Deep-Duergar iconography that nobody except Scales wants to carry. Rourke pays the band 20 gold a head afterward and insists on paying even after they confess it was Duergar — the ghosts are gone, close enough.
Everybody levels up to four. Back at the Uphill Climb, Scales pulls Dreadie aside for a private favor. A years-old throat injury has been limiting his 'delicious power of accent.' Dreadie casts Cure Wounds; Scales coughs up a wet red lump Dreadie tries to put back in with a handkerchief; and Scales speaks in his real voice — a thick Louisanna drawl from a town named for its founders, Lewis Dutre and Anna Winters. The band stares. Dreadie's defense: 'Dreadie Mercurie didn't know.' The late crowd has dwindled to a table of four priests. The band plays for them anyway. Scales grinds his sax on a priestess until she goes visibly unchaste and asks for Scales and Rico upstairs. Scales answers 'oh dear, let's just take everybody.' Troy absent, the session ends there.
